let's be honest...you don't bat an eyelash when you buy a $14 cocktail or a $25 t-shirt. why not join me in embracing the spirit of the season and throw a couple of extra bucks toward worthy organizations doing some hard work. here are my favorite philly non-profits and a few global do-gooders.
MISSION: "Cradles to Crayons endeavors to provide homeless and low-income
children with the essentials they require to thrive - to feel safe,
warm, ready to learn, and valued. At the same time, we lay a
foundation for lasting change by providing meaningful, tangible
volunteer opportunities to thousands of families and individuals and
hundreds of corporations each year."
MISSION: "Promoting bicycling as a healthy, low-cost and environmentally friendly form of transportation and recreation.
MISSION: "Ensuring that everyone has access to affordable, nutritious food. The Food Trust strives to make healthy food available to all. Working
with neighborhoods, schools, grocers, farmers and policymakers, we've
developed a comprehensive approach that combines nutrition education and
greater availability of affordable, healthy food."
MISSION: "The
mission of Community Legal Services (CLS) of Philadelphia is to help
low-income Philadelphia residents obtain equal access to justice by
providing them with advice and representation in civil legal matters;
advocating for their legal rights; and conducting community education
about the legal issues that affect them."
MISSION: “The John Bartram Association protects and enhances the landmark
Bartram’s Garden and House, advances the Bartram legacy of discovery,
gardening and art, and inspires audiences of all ages to care for the
natural world.”
MISSION: "To honor at
Pennhurst the ongoing civil rights struggle of Americans with
disabilities.”
and honorable mention to these great NGOs -
