a picture & a poem: mark sanders

The Cranes, Texas January - by Mark Sanders
------------------
I call my wife outdoors to have her listen,
to turn her ears upward, beyond the cloud-veiled
sky where the moon dances thin light,
to tell her, “Don’t hear the cars on the freeway—

it’s not the truck-rumble. It is and is not
the sirens.” She stands there, on deck
a rocking boat, wanting to please the captain
who would have her hear the inaudible.
Her eyes, so blue the day sky is envious,
fix blackly on me, her mouth poised on question
like a stone. But, she hears, after all.
                                                           January on the Gulf,

warm wind washing over us,
we stand chilled in the winter of those voices.

ear candy: dr. dog!

i'm missing philly this week...so west philadelphia's own dr. dog seem to be the balm i need, which is good since the "random" function in my itunes plays them a lot. they are kinda awesome, so these black and white diamond slice earrings by lexluxe seem appropriately equally cool.

a picture & a poem: carlo betocchi

Summer by Carlo Betocchi
-----------------------
And it grows, the vain
summer,
even for us with our
bright green sins:

behold the dry guest,
the wind,
as it stirs up quarrels
among magnolia boughs

and plays its serene
tune on
the prows of all the leaves—
and then is gone,

leaving the leaves
still there,
the tree still green, but breaking
the heart of the air.

inspiration...blake cody rogers!

painter blake cody rogers creates pieces of art that evoke summer heat and vivid energy...to me at least. so beautiful! i love the pinks and i'm not usually a pink person.

friday fab/five: wishing for summer...

it's supposed to be a high of -9 on monday (and a low of -22)...
how could i not be daydreaming about swimming and sandals!

1. bathing suits: i'm more of a bikini gal, but this one-piece from madewell is pretty cool!

2. sun hats: at the urging of my dermatologist i finally became a fan of wearing a
hat to protect my face from the brutal summer sun...now i feel very stylish.

3. sandals: it's probably time to break my addiction to flip-flops...
these cute red sandals from modcloth would help with the withdrawal.

4. swimming: i want to immerse myself in warm tropical waters...especially right now
as i wear 4 layers of clothes. this beautiful picture is of a cenote (a surface connection
to a subterranean water body) in chichen-itza, mexico.

5. sexy jewelry: gold on tan skin. need i say more. (rootsandwings jewelry is awesome)

ear candy: alt j

diggin' the digital sounds from alt-j....they're kinda like a mash-up of dreamy computer jams and cool vocals. these chevron earrings from scarlettgarnet seem naturally rhythmic to me.

a picture & a poem: shane koyczan

6:59 AM by Shane Koyczan
------------------
I’ve been told
that people in the army
do more by 7:00 am
than I do
in an entire day but if I wake
at 6:59 am
and turn to you
to trace the outline of your lips
with mine
I will have done enough
and killed no one
in the process.

inspiration...noemie goudal

Les Amants (Promenade), 2009

i kinda want to step into these lush, large and captivating photographs by noemie goudal. looking at them makes me feel lonely and content and breathless all at the same time. which is a good thing.

friday/fab five: veggie burgers/hobbits/boots, etc.

1. the hobbit: i got the chance to see this movie in 3D IMAX...
and now i find regular life rather dull...JK.

2. ballet body fusion at lifetime fitness: kicks my butt...literally!

3. hilary's eat well veggie burgers: so yummy. (and the packaging uses my favorite font -
pupcat - i love that i'm a nerdy enough designer to know that!)

4. winter boots: YOU can still be a fashionista on 6 degrees days in these cute boots by sorel.

5. joe barry: heard this swamp pop artist from the 50-60s featured on fresh air...
caught myself dancing around the kitchen!

a picture & a poem: alice fulton

the wreckage entrepreneur by alice fulton
----------------------------------------------------------
It takes faith—this tripping through the mixed blessings
of debris with eyes peeled for the toxic
toothpaste green of copper keystones.
On good days Carborundum-bladed saws free sublime
objective blossoms; stained glass
hangs rescued and suspended
like frozen scarves on lines
behind indigents at barrel fires;
granite cherubs wearing crowbar marks
lie abandoned at her door.
After the wrecking ball
she loads her truck with crushed iotas
because cast marble dust's more durable than solid cuts.
Only occasionally, gargoyles blur
under the pressure of her gaze
as if vision were itself corrosive.
Then deco mirrors hold her
as they catacomb the warehouse walls,
and clinging at the empty
gilding of a door, she wants
a shower and lather of pumice
to melt the gritty casing of her
nakedness. How small she looks
beside what she has saved.

friday fab/five: roasted veggies/patina/kids, etc.

1. roasting vegetables: nothing warms up my little apartment like roasting some veggies. here are some roasting tips

2. patina: it's kinda dangerous to live a few blocks away from this (lifestyle?) store or is it?

3. metro transit: since i'm committed to remaining car-free and it's usually 9 degrees outside - i have to give a shout-out to the (mostly reliable) public transportation system in mnpls/st. paul. [and the to-go card makes me feel sorry for philly tokens...those poor tokens.]

4. kids of my friends/family: talk about unconditional love and appreciation. these little folks make me feel like a celebrity!

5. laura mercier: i'm totally not used to frigid wind blowing onto my face and it would be fair to say that my skin needs some serious TLC. this skin care line by laura mercier is one of my go-to pamper products.

ear candy: iron & wine!

maybe it's the cold weather, but i've been listening to a lot of iron & wine this week...sam beam's songs seem super COZY to me. i saw him play in philly many many years ago...these geometric brass earrings by talastone are a tribute to that younger version of myself.

a picture & a poem: billy collins!

Silence by Billy Collins
-----------------------
There is the sudden silence of the crowd
above a player not moving on the field,
and the silence of the orchid.

The silence of the falling vase
before it strikes the floor,
the silence of the belt when it is not striking the child.

The stillness of the cup and the water in it,
the silence of the moon
and the quiet of the day far from the roar of the sun.

The silence when I hold you to my chest,
the silence of the window above us,
and the silence when you rise and turn away.

And there is the silence of this morning
which I have broken with my pen,
a silence that had piled up all night

like snow falling in the darkness of the house—
the silence before I wrote a word
and the poorer silence now.

so long 2012!

holy crap...where did a whole year go? to celebrate the fleeting nature of time, i would like to recognize (in no particular order) twelve my favorite things from 2012:
